Schools Covid Policy
BCT’s Care Commitment
Keeping Our Theatre Safe for YOU!
Birmingham Children's Theatre considers the health and safety of our audiences to be of the utmost importance, just as we also wish to protect and be mindful of the health and safety of our performing artists and staff. We are a mask-friendly theatre and encourage anyone who wishes to wear a mask to do so.
Though we do not require (and have never required) our patrons to show proof of vaccination or negative Covid tests to attend our performances, all of BCT’s staff, artists, teachers, and ushers are required to be fully vaccinated.
If anyone in your party feels sick or shows symptoms of COVID-19, we ask that you please stay at home. Our friendly Front of House staff will work with you to find an alternate performance when you are feeling better.
Mask Policy
BCT’s Mask Policy for the 2022-2023 season will follow closely the recommendations set forth by the CDC based on COVID-19 Community Levels. When Jefferson County is at a HIGH level of community spread, masks will be required of all patrons in the Wee Folks Theatre and Playspace; and, masks will be highly encouraged in the MainStage Theatre. When at a MEDIUM level, masks will continue to be encouraged, and optional when at a LOW level.
We wish to avoid any outbreaks in the organization because a significant portion of our workforce, specifically our onstage artists, work without the benefit of masks. Behind the scenes, we will continue to follow strict protocols to keep our shows on stage and to create a safe work environment for artists and staff.
Why are masks encouraged but not required in the MainStage Theatre when they are required in other areas?
Due to the size of the theater, ceiling heights, an advanced air filtration system, the distance we can create between audience members, and the distance between audiences and the stage, there is a lower chance for community spread in our MainStage space than in the smaller rooms of our building. However, we still highly encourage mask use for our MainStage audiences at times of HIGH community transmission and will have masks available at the box office for anyone who would like one.
Masks & Sanitizer available
Disposable masks and hand sanitizer will be readily available for all patrons at various stations throughout our lobby, classrooms, and restrooms.
Audience Capacity
At this time, BCT is limiting our audience capacity to 60% in each theater space.
Regular symptom screening of staff
All Front of House and other public facing staff will be screened daily for Covid symptoms and sent home if any indication of infection is present.
Cleaning and Air Filtration Protocols
The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex has received the Global Biorisk Advisory Council Star Accreditation for its facilities, including the MainStage Theatre and lobby. To read more about what this means for your experience attending our shows, click here. Additionally, HEPA air purifiers have been added to the Wee Folks Theatre, PlaySpace, and all classrooms.
Will the Actors be Wearing Masks?
BCT’s goal is to create an environment where all actors are able to perform without wearing a mask, and we appreciate your help in making that possible. However, we have given each actor the option to wear a face covering during any performance if their personal health needs require it. We will never knowingly have an actor on our stage that has tested positive for COVID-19.
If Your School Has an Outbreak
We ask that you notify us if your school or classroom experiences an outbreak before your field trip so we can reschedule your trip. Please email spierce@bct123.org to notify us and reschedule your trip.
